Do you have a favourite photographer?
When I started my photography journey, I studied many books and I'm self-taught. I intentionally didn't look into other well-known photographers and their images as I wanted to just find my own way and style. As I got established in the Peak District I came across many others on social media and out in the hills that all inspire me in different ways! So I can't say I have a favourite photographer but there many that have inspired me along the way and some I now call great friends.
Top tip for other photographers:
Try not to compare yourself to others too much and try to focus on what you want to capture and how you want to edit, what looks good to you. Put your own stamp on your images as that's the only way you can stand out from what is becoming a pretty crowded area! Also, don't take too much notice of likes on social media–some of my lowest scoring posts are images that people have gone on to buy or I've placed in competitions with so it's really not an accurate gauge of your work.
Favourite photo:
It's always hard to choose your favourite image. But one of the most memorable for me was this shot taken at Ladybower Reservoir, I had come for sunset to photograph the infamous "Plug holes" - the reservoir overflows. While I was getting set up I noticed one contrail across the sky, then a small plane came and left another making a perfect X in the sky! I got this shot with the reflection of the trails - like naughts and crosses or the Scottish flag!
It's always performed well on social media and I had an artist get in touch who then painted it and gave me a copy, this image was also a front cover for a Derbyshire publication. I like to capture classic scenes in different or unique conditions so this image is me to tee!
