Photographer of the Week - 14 May 2021 - Wesley Kristopher

14 May 2021

Posted by Philip Mowbray

Wesley Kristopher is a landscape, wildlife and wedding photographer from Sheffield, UK. He's located right on the edge of the UK's first official National Park - the Peak District, where he discovered his love for photography and passion for the outdoors.

Wesley inspires others to visit the park mainly through his stunning Instagram profile @peopleofthepeak and joined Picfair last year to showcase his best work and to make them available for purchase as prints and downloads.

Do you have a favourite photographer?

When I started my photography journey, I studied many books and I'm self-taught. I intentionally didn't look into other well-known photographers and their images as I wanted to just find my own way and style. As I got established in the Peak District I came across many others on social media and out in the hills that all inspire me in different ways! So I can't say I have a favourite photographer but there many that have inspired me along the way and some I now call great friends.

Top tip for other photographers:

Try not to compare yourself to others too much and try to focus on what you want to capture and how you want to edit, what looks good to you. Put your own stamp on your images as that's the only way you can stand out from what is becoming a pretty crowded area! Also, don't take too much notice of likes on social media–some of my lowest scoring posts are images that people have gone on to buy or I've placed in competitions with so it's really not an accurate gauge of your work.

Favourite photo:

It's always hard to choose your favourite image. But one of the most memorable for me was this shot taken at Ladybower Reservoir, I had come for sunset to photograph the infamous "Plug holes" - the reservoir overflows. While I was getting set up I noticed one contrail across the sky, then a small plane came and left another making a perfect X in the sky! I got this shot with the reflection of the trails - like naughts and crosses or the Scottish flag! It's always performed well on social media and I had an artist get in touch who then painted it and gave me a copy, this image was also a front cover for a Derbyshire publication. I like to capture classic scenes in different or unique conditions so this image is me to tee!

When you have the lofty heights of Winnats and Mam Tor nearby it's easy to miss the nooks and crannies. But explore away from those honey pot places and you'll find fascinating scenes here! That morning there was a fantastic temperature inversion in place and with the sunlight hitting the castle just right it looked like a scene from Lord Of The Rings! Talking of movies Cave Dale features in the films The Princess Bride (1987) and The Other Boleyn Girl (2008). An incredible place that should be high up your list of places to visit in the Peak. These tors have been named over the years by local residents. The #saltcellar is one of the most recognisable. It's a decent trek here but well worth it! This is an example of an area with stunning views where you can get parts of it to yourself at times which as we ease out of lockdown I'm sure the honey pot locations will be very busy. Not long too go now. Read less

Oh how I'll miss the views! It's felt kinda awkward promoting the UK's 1st National Park throughout this pandemic. Seeing and hearing the stories of the fires, huge crowds and littering last year to recently groups travelling from London crashing their vehicle and many cars with young families getting stuck in the snow over night. The parks definitely had alot of news coverage during this saga! But unfortunately not alot of positive news! Alot of us turn to Insta for location advice and are inspired or influenced to come to places like the Peak District. It's very important getting outside for our wellbeing, I get that, it's what brought me to the Peak District and helped me discover my passion and what drives me now in life. But for now I need to stay away. This full lockdown, the 3rd one! just feels like a massive blow and that we are back at square one again. But there is light on the horizon! And hopefully during Spring we start to see some real change back to life as it was. For now things arent great and I'm not comfortable wandering the Peak like I normally do so will be sticking to my immediate surroundings and sharing past adventures of my own and yours over @peopleofthepeakofficial . I hope others set an example as seeing the recent stories of your top tens shows many are inspired by people in the community. Whilst it feels like a drag limiting what we enjoy doing etc do we really want this pandemic to keep dragging on for another year or more? Ultimately we all want this gone. Stay safe, stay local and get planning for when things hopefully start to return to normal. Till we tread again! #peopleofthepeak Read less
