Interview with Ming Cheng

11 June 2018

Posted by Joe Bloggs

Ming Cheng is a London based Photographer, Architect, Planner & Urbanist.

What's your single best tip/hack for fellow photographers?

Always shoot backplates, I have lost count the amount of time it saves me during post production. Rather than spending hours in Photoshop, I can use these shots to replace objects, take out and put in people in my final shot.

What’s your favourite piece of equipment? Why?

My gorillapod tripod. Small, versatile and secure enough that it saves me numerous times not have to take my tripod out in tricky locations.

What's the weirdest situation you've found yourself in while taking a photo?

I was in New York visiting Grand Central Terminal and managed to secure a photo pass beforehand that enabled me to use my tripod throughout the station. The looks I got from other photographers when they were told to put their tripod away while I set mine up and took time-lapse and long exposure is something I will always remember.

What’s your favourite shot of yours and why?

This blue hour shot in Osaka. Japan is one of my favourite countries to visit and Osaka is an amazing city. I'd been planning to do this shot for a few days, waiting for the weather to turn. I set up the camera on the top floor of the hotel, waiting for the sun to set and the city lights to turn on. As the city gradually illuminated and the sky turned blue, I could see it was going to be a great shot. What I didn’t expect was the green neon light on the car park on top of Namba Shopping Mall.

And finally - why do you use Picfair?
I like the multiple licensing options Picfair offer and I actually have exposure unlike other websites.
