Remnants of the Tongan volcanic dust cloud in the upper stratosphere are the likely cause of the stunning colours seen here at Scott Base, Antarctica today! A title like ‘Turkish Delight’ doesn’t really sound apt for a remote Antarctic station in minus thirty degrees Celsius but this was the colour of the sky and partial moon at midday on Ross Island where Scott Base (NZ) & McMurdo Station (USA) are both located. The slight ‘nautical twilight’ we normally get around midday at this time of the year usually means we can just make out the horizon if we’re lucky but we were presented with quite a show which had most of the station personnel grabbing jackets and running outside with their cameras for a look at the awesome colours… Read less

NGC 7380 is a young open cluster of stars in the northern circumpolar constellation of Cepheus, discovered by Caroline Herschel in 1787. The surrounding emission nebulosity is known colloquially as the Wizard Nebula. German-born astronomer William Herschel included his sister's discovery in his catalog, and labelled it H VIII.77. The nebula is known as S 142 in the 1959 Sharpless catalog (Sh2-142). It is extremely difficult to observe visually, usually requiring very dark skies and an O-III filter. The NGC 7380 complex is located at a distance of approximately 8500 light-years from the Sun, in the Perseus Arm of the Milky Way.Raw data sourced from telescope.live. This image is a combination of over 80 raw images obtained from a profesional institution-grade telescope located high on a mountain in Chile. For this image I rented time on a Planewave 24 inch telescope in El Sauce Chile from Telescope.live and specified the target area of the sky I want and how many of what type of raw images I want. When you take a photo, your camera shutter is only open for a fraction of a second, but astrophotography is different. This deep sky object is soooo dim that it required the camera shutter to be open for 5, 10 or 15 minutes at a time. The colors in this image are created by high energy radiation from the stars illuminating gas clouds (a bit like Neon lights). The red colors are produced by energised Hydrogen and Silicon gas while the blue colors are prodced by energised Oxygen gas. Separate raw images are captured for each of the Hydrogen, Silicon and Oxygen wavelengths of light. These files can get quite large, it's not uncommon to capture 3 to 5Gb of data for a single image. This raw data is then processed using specialised astronomical software (similar to what the Hubble team use) to produce the image you see here. Read less
