Photographer of the Week - 7 Jan 2022 - Luis F Arevalo

07 January 2022

Posted by Philip Mowbray

Luis is a Calgary-based mountain guide, who brings his passion for the great outdoors to his photography too–presenting an outstanding series of themed shots on his Picfair Store.

Favourite photographer:
Chris Burkard - I have an intricate connection with cold weather.  I find winter’s light mesmerizing and playful; it is both serene and intense depending on the mood of the day. Burkard, in my opinion, possesses a sublime mastery of light in cold environments. He captures human action as I rarely have witnessed before by creating shots of very rapid sports within the solace of splendid landscapes.

He can’t be said to be a sports photographer or a landscapist. He’s a rare kind of photographer that blends styles to create compelling, serene and almost journalistic imagery of his subjects. He is a talented young man that has successfully utilized social media to showcase his work without sacrificing quality, depth or art.

His style has definitely inspired me to go further, discover the last of the world’s unexplored corners and, above all, accept humans as dignified subjects of pristine landscape photography.

Top tip:
Photography encompasses techniques. For sure there’s a method that needs to be learnt. However, never forget that photography is, above all, art. And as an artist, you must honour your own style. One must believe in its own aesthetics’ perception. It is one’s eye that must always be the guiding soul behind a lens. If you believe in your craft, others will understand and be moved by your intended message. In the end, photography isn’t a process. Photography is your soul gazing for its own reflection in the subjects you choose to capture.

Favourite photo:
Storm over the Ramparts (see below)

My favourite photograph embodies my admiration for the power of nature. I find storms truly magnificent. The rawness of the clash between a late summer and early frosty fall day in the mountains is truly fascinating to me as it belittles human strength in a second. No matter the equipment, the clothing or the training, a human is nothing when nature decides to manifest itself. When rare late summer thunderstorms occur after an unseasonable snowfall, lighting over the snow-capped mountains of the Canadian Rockies, reveals a  powerful, stupefying and enthralling otherworldly landscape.

To capture this image I planned for a long time. These peaks are part of the Park Ranges deep in the Tonquin Valley of Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada. They are remote and require a lengthy ski approach of 26 kilometres from the trail’s parking not to mention the required atmospheric event and precise capture moment to finally showcase this rare occurrence.  I love this image for the effort needed, the time dedicated and the sheer randomness of the moment.  As images have a soul and a personal history for me, Storm Over The Ramparts ticks all the right emotions I experience while photographing.
