With this year’s Oktoberfest in full swing, you’d be forgiven for struggling to explore Munich much further than the nearest tent and its plethora of liquid offerings. Beyond the world famous beer fest, however, lies a thriving and varied metropolis borne of Benedictine origins just north of the Alps. Afforded world alpha city status, yet steeped in royal and historical influence, the Bavarian capital offers an exhilarating and almost surreal combination of contradictions. From automotive giants to environmental innovation; surfing hub to populous cityscape; neo-Gothic façade to an entire Olympic village, we’ve compiled a selection of images showcasing the stunning and incredible diversity of Germany’s third largest city.
