The global presence of Islam throughout history has meant its architecture has been influenced by many cultures, and in turn it has also influenced many others. Islamic design has been mainly influenced by Persian, Roman, Chinese, and Indian traditions, and more recently, modern Western architecture. There is also a long history of buildings which were constructed under one faith being converted to another, as in the case of the Hagia Sophia. Regardless of its transnational reach, there is a roughly uniform look to mosques around the world, with most maintaining a dome structure on the roof as well as a tall minaret - which serves as the highest point in the building. Geometry, symmetry, and calligraphy also dominate the design, regardless of the country they are located in. We’ve chosen some incredible photographs which showcase Islamic architecture in mosques at its best.
