Since their introduction to the public in 1825 by George Stephenson on the Stockton and Darlington Railway, trains have played a vital part in the very fabric of our society. For commuters, they may be too often the bane of many people's existence, however outside of the day-to-day routines, they offer some of the most stunning vistas and are often the most visually appealing way to travel.

Here we’ve picked out some of our favourite images from the Picfair library featuring train journeys in spectacular locations from all reaches of the planet.
