Thana Faroq's Women of Yemen

14 November 2017

Posted by Picfair

Picfair has photographers uploading thousands of images every day from across the globe, but every now and then, a photographer stops us in our tracks. Thana Faroq is a documentary photographer from Yemen, who recently added this stunning, startling set of images focusing on the women of Yemen, a country where an under-reported Civil War has wrought devastation and hardship since 2015. “My aim is to shade a light on these women’s struggles, portray their situation and produce not only startling portraits but also powerful stories”. Thana’s images show Yemeni women working as photographers to provide for their families; schoolchildren in their uniform after a year without education; and women who have survived conflict by fleeing their homes before having to marry for safety. “Though each woman has suffered the war differently, they all share one thing in common: the resilient spirit.”

As men out of work women have taken the lead to provide for thier families in Yemen. This photo was taken in a small photography studio in Sanaa where Amal was trained to be a photographer. I have witnessed her taking ID photos. Something was so powerful about her holding the camera and making a living out of it. Read less

Since March 2015 and until today, thousands of families in Yemen fled their homes with their clothes only searching for a safe place, shelter, and a new home. Women and children are the most affected, especially the poor that do not have any fault in the war. They are the ones who bear the heavier load. Though each woman has suffered the war differently, they all share one thing in common: the resilient spirit. The idea of documenting women's lives during a conflict is not new. However, these stories remain under-reported in Yemen, a country torn by war and conflict. My aim is to shade a light on these women’s struggles, portray their situation and produce not only startling portraits but also powerful stories. Read less

I remember it took a while to take her portrait, not because she didn’t want to, but because she was too busy getting ready and looking pretty. For Yemeni families, marrying their daughters is a desperate response to extreme circumstances. Layal is a victim, a child who was forced into adulthood due the war. A displaced child who flee her home in Saada, only to be rescued by marriage. A face that I’ll never forget. Read less
