When a predator is discovered, birds start to emit alarm calls and may fly at the threat, in an attempt to divert its attention by harassing it, sometimes even making physical contact. This is known as "mobbing". Mobbing usually starts with just one or two birds, but may attract larger numbers, often of many species. Mobbing behaviour has been recorded in a wide range of species, but crows are amongst the most frequent mobbers of the bird world. In the case of this capture, the Golden Eagle had been near a crows nest, likely to have chicks at this time of year, causing the parent to chase, harass and peck at the eagle until there was no longer any threat to the chicks. You can see at the moment this was taken, that the Golden Eagle was in the process of doing a dive to evade the crow, and at reaching top speeds of 200 MPH, the mobbing was short lived there after! I have witnessed mobbing on many occasions, most commonly aimed toward redkites and buzzards, but to witness the crow chase and harass the UK's second largest raptor really was an exciting watch and this photograph captures the scene perfectly. For those that are interested, this image was captured via my Canon 5D Mark IV body, alongside my Sigma 150-600mm lens. Read less
