With temperatures set to plunge as winter takes hold, it’s all too easy to start thinking the four-legged folk are onto a good thing with this hibernation business. Why battle with the elements and an inordinate supply of spiced pumpkin everything when a cosy bed beckons? We’ll admit winter brings its own unique set of chilly, spice-wrapped, battery-draining challenges, but with the cold season also comes a wealth of new photographic opportunity; beautifully clear air, crisp views, and an entirely new perspective on routes walked every day when the familiar lies buried beneath a blanket of snow. Frosty macros beckon, details suddenly loom from a landscape stripped bare, and an icy grip can turn even the mundane into the magical. It’s one thing to present a stunning visual depiction of winter but to evoke and convey its raw icy grip is another matter entirely. As powerfully effective as it can be tricky to accomplish, a truly great image does both. So how do you successfully capture that biting essence of the cold? Take a look.
