Airplanes have always been a bit of a mystery to me. They defy the senses. Here’s a large metal box, filled with all sorts of machinery, luggage and a load of people, and somehow it manages to take off into the air and stay there too. It’s not surprising that many people suffer from fear of flying: on paper, it really doesn’t look all that plausible or safe. And yet airplanes have been gracing our airspace for nearly 115 years, since the Wright brothers completed the first documented sustained flight in history.
