Favourite photographer:
Paul Nicklen is certainly the person who has influenced me the most on how to use photography as a way of protecting wildlife and the environment. However, there are many other names I could mention that helped me to create 'my style', such as Piotr Naskrecki and two friends of mine - Emanuele and Francesco - which helped me during my macro photography phase. Thanks to their help I had the chance to learn the importance of the details everywhere also for general wildlife and landscape photography, not only for macro.
Best tip for other photographers:
To get great shots a deep knowledge of the subject, with good planning of all possible variables, is essential.
Favourite photograph:
Good question! I have a couple of images that I am particularly fond of from my last season in the field (see below).
The first image is an overview of Cuverville Island in Antarctica. As a wildlife and landscape photographer I think in this image, I captured everything. Animals (Gentoo penguins) live in their natural environment surrounded by mountains, glaciers, and icebergs with a beautiful cloudy sky. Moreover, is the human presence, with a small Zodiac (boat) approaching the landing site giving the image a very complete description.
The second one is a shot of a Polar bear's family. This image tells the story of that day. In fact, one of the two cubs (specimens in the middle) was extremely interested in our ship, coming really close to us. At the same time, the female (first bear in the right-down corner) was pushing him away from us, screaming. The sound was incredibly intense and first the first time I had the chance to hear the vocalizations of a bear.
