Interview with Grant Beedie

03 March 2017

Posted by Gemma Suyat

Hi Grant! Tell us about yourself in two sentences - who are you?

I'm a 37-year-old, Scottish macro photographer who has lived in Christchurch, New Zealand for the past 13 years. I've been into photography for around 5 years now.

QWhat's the weirdest situation you've found yourself in while taking a photograph?

AI went out at night last summer in my own garden to get some spider shots in the dark. I was wearing a headlight and after a few minutes I heard one of my neighbours shouting over the fence at me saying he was about to call the police as he thought I was a burglar about to break in to the house! I quickly calmed him down when I explained I was the house owner and that I was taking some shots of the spiders!

QWhat do you shoot on? What's your favourite set up?

AI travel lightly. I only ever use a Nikon D7100 with a Nikon 105mm macro lens. All shots are handheld in natural light.

QWhat's your number one tip for an aspiring photographer?

A Never give up, we all have lots of bad shots every time we shoot. Keep practicing and your ratio of good shots versus bad shots will eventually get better!

"It's hard to choose my favourite photo! One of my latest shots 'Beautiful Bumblebee on Flower' I feel makes me very happy as this shot is what I'm all about as a photographer. ... Read more

"Shot in my own Garden. This was one of my very first 'cool' shots that I was really happy with. I realised that if you watch an insect for long enough, you see them do some really cool things, like cleaning themselves with their legs like this hoverfly. Also, it shows that you don't have to leave your own garden to get a great shot!" Read less

"My favourite insects are bumblebees, so I'm very happy shooting them for hours on a summer's morning at Christchurch Botanic Gardens. Capturing them moving is very difficult, but it's very rewarding when you get a good result. It also made me very proud to sell this image on Picfair and to have it used on the customer's very own website!" Read less
