Leaving Home: Migrant and Refugee Children

Growing number of migrants and refugees arrived in Europe between 2015 and 2017. Traveling by bus, by train and walking long distances, families ran away from civil wars, leaving home, friends and memories behind. The photographers Radek Procyk, Javier Fergo and Zalmaï documented their stories, experiences and, often, tragic encounters. Hoping for a better life in Europe, groups of refugees crossed Serbian, Syrian and then Hungarian, Austrian and German borders. Exhausted, relocated to refugee camps, these families progressively lost trust in their future. Migrant and refugee children have been the most vulnerable victims of this humanitarian crisis, suffering from physiological trauma, physical abuse and exploitation. This selection of images highlights their daily life, on the move and in the camps.
