Hi Zoe! Tell us about yourself in two sentences - who are you?
I am originally from Scotland but I am living in the USA right now on another expat assignment with my husband and kids. I have always been interested in photography since my teens, but it really took off when we lived in Asia for 6 years and I was able to take a distance learning photography course, and through this I experienced all aspects of photography - I discovered at that point that macro work was the area I enjoyed the most.
QWhat's the weirdest situation you've found yourself in while taking a photograph?
AWell, when shooting macro outside you can’t position your subjects so you tend to find me lying on the ground, crouched under a bush, or in some other awkward position trying to get close enough to my subject. It does draw some funny looks from passers-by sometimes who have no idea of what you are looking at...
QWhat do you shoot on? What's your favourite set up?
AMy current camera is a Canon 40D, and you almost always find my Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro lens attached. I use it for macro work, but it is also an excellent portrait lens. I also have the (inexpensive) Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 and I am always amazed at the images it can produce … every photographer should have one! As well as these two lenses, I recently bought a Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 L USM lens which I use for wildlife photography and sporting events.
QWhat's your number one tip for an aspiring photographer?
APractice, practice, practice! Always carry your camera with you, but before you start shooting, just stop and look around. Look for light and shadows, contrast and colour. Take your time and enjoy the experience. Photography has taught me to slow down, and really appreciate nature to its fullest as when you shoot macro every detail counts.
