Hi Suman! Tell us about yourself in two sentences - who are you?
Hi! Born and raised in a small rural terai village of Dhanusha in Nepal, I am a simple person who is very much passionate about and addicted to photography. I'm also a corporate finance graduate and an account-assistant.
QWhat's the weirdest situation you've found yourself in while taking a photograph?
AThere's nothing specifically weird that I can remember, but in my village when I photograph insects they ask me if I am nuts for shooting insects with a DSLR. I was once chased by a troop of monkeys, for trying to photograph a mother and her baby from about one and a half meters away with a 18-55mm Canon kit lens. And I was also chased by a rural girl for photographing her washing dishes in a pond near her village.
QWhat do you shoot on? What's your favourite set up?
AMy first camera purchase was a Canon Rebel T3, funded by a childhood friend and my brother. Now I have a Canon 60D, an 18-55mm kit lens and a Canon 60mm macro lens. I also have a Ricoh GR. These are enough to cover my photographic needs for now, but I am planning to get a 70-300mm telephoto lens - just to be sure I am not chased by monkeys again!!! I capture anything that attracts me, but I mostly enjoy shooting street photography, insects and nature close up shots.
QWhat's your number one tip for an aspiring photographer?
ANumber one tip…This is a tough one!! I, myself, need one. Keep your camera handy, shoot raw. There are photographs everywhere, you just have to learn to look and keep shooting.

This is my favourite image. I won a portrait competition, but unfortunately the website that hosted the competition has now shut down. He was waiting for government officers to pay him his old age allowance but they said he’d already taken it – he suspected it was the corrupt officers who forged his allowance. He started crying with us and told the story, thinking me and my friend were journalists (since we had a camera). Read less
