Hi Steve! Tell us about yourself in two sentences - who are you?

I'm an amateur photographer who works in IT, and I am happiest taking photographs in the great outdoors.

QWhat's the weirdest situation you've found yourself in while taking a photograph?

AI was looking down at the back LCD of my camera reviewing photos, when I was asked why I was taking "selfies" of my feet by an elderly lady!

QWhat do you shoot on? What's your favourite set up?

AI use a Pentax K5II with a DFA 100mm macro lens and a Sigma 24mm macro lens, all shot in natural light.

QWhat's your number one tip for an aspiring photographer?

AKeep shooting, keep learning, keep experimenting.

My favourite pic has to be the Dragonfly Sunrise. Not only was I very fortunate to come across this, it was also sold through Picfair to Etihad Airways in-flight magazine. It makes me very proud that thousands and thousands of people will have seen my photograph. I was fortunate to find this frost covered Dragonfly one late September morning on my local patch. However I had forgotten my macro lens! A 2 mile run home and back, and the sun had begun to rise and the frost had begun to melt, leaving the Dragonfly sparkling in the sun. Always check and double check your kit before leaving! Read less

I was fortunate to look down to find this alderfly emerging from a small pond. As it rested on the branch I was able to shoot down towards the water that was sparkling with the early morning sunrise creating a nice bokeh, and showing off it's semi transparent wings. Things can sometimes be right under your nose! Read less

This butterfly was resting on grass and getting in close while it was inactive allowed me to compose the shot. Hunting for butterflies early morning? Use binoculars to scan the vegetation! Read less

I discovered this bee one late evening in my garden. As it was too dark to photograph, I got up early the following morning to find it covered in a light dew resting on the cone flower. A lot of insects start to retire for the night when the sun goes down and a hunt then can be quite fruitful for the following morning. Read less

With this shot I staked out the flower and allowed insects to come to it. Keeping relatively still, the insects took me for part of the background, and using slow movements I was able to focus on the eyes to get them as sharp as possible. Slow movements and keeping low can often get good results. Read less

I had wanted something different from the usual sort of butterfly shot that I take, and decided to get a head-on shot. After searching for over an hour and nearly giving up I came across this skipper resting on the top of a flower. Moving carefully I was able to get into position and get the shot I wanted. Sometimes persevering can get you the image you are after. Read less
