Interview with Steve Meddle

13 March 2015

Posted by Sally Hart

Hi Steve! Tell us about yourself in two sentences - who are you?

Hello all. I'm a photographer who lives in the South East of England however most of my images are taken in London as I'm there everyday taking pictures on set of television programmes being made. When I'm not doing that I'm taking Editorial Stock Pictures and then some Stock Video with a little Street photography on my days off.

QWhat's the weirdest situation you've found yourself in while taking a photograph?

AWell this isn't so much of an event but a weird thing I have to do to overcome my fear of heights... If I'm looking through the camera at the subject when up a ladder or on the side of a building I'm ok but as soon as I remove the camera from my eye and start to look at my surroundings it gets a bit hairy for me, I much prefer to photograph things on the ground.

QWhat do you shoot on? What's your favourite set up?

AI usually shoot on a Nikon system and Fuji x100 but of late have starting using micro four thirds cameras because the silent shutter is very important on set and have since found I absolutely love using them. The quality these little cameras give is unbelievable, not to mention the weight gains... A whole m43 kit now fits in one small bag that was meant for a DSLR and Lens. I use Panasonic Lumix cameras at the moment but am looking to change to Olympus as their lens range is certainly going forward in leaps. Right now my favourite walk about set up is Lumix LX7 and Leica 25mm f1.4 lens which is great for just about everything.

QWhat's your number one tip for an aspiring photographer?

AMake sure you edit properly... Do a first edit and then edit the number of images down again. Just choose the very best even if that means just choosing one image from a day out, it will make your work shine... Oh and don't get hung up on what gear you have...just take some pictures!

'This is my favourite pic uploaded to Picfair, 'Railway Train Tracks at Sunrise'. I was on my way to work one Saturday morning and the train was delayed so I had to amuse my self for a while so started look around and take some images. It was a bit misty and then the light completely changed to a glow and the train tracks started to glint and that was my cue and that's how this was image was born.' Read less

'Another walking to work picture. I had seen the sun move behind the Shard and was hoping some light might bleed through the edges of the building as it's glass, but none did so i just waited for it to move to the right a little before firing the shutter. In post I blurred the edges of the frame and cropped to 16-9 ratio.' Read less

'This image was found on one of my many wanderings around the city of London, I was walking through Leadenhall market and saw this guy sweeping so I just stood in the middle of the road (out of his way mind) and waited until I saw what I liked then started to click away. Waiting for the scene to get interesting is half the job.' Read less

'On my way to work one very nice October morning and the sun had already to come up above Tower bridge so I thought lets just find a place along the river and wait. Millennium Bridge seemed like a good place with commuters constantly crossing over the Thames I knew as soon the sun was in the right place there would be figures I could use in the frame. Worth the wait!' Read less

'What's not to like about Brighton. Every time I visit I find new things to photograph, I always like to get the beach empty if I can which is a challenge. This was the first shot of the day when I arrived and it was in September so not as many people walking around and the deck chairs were already there.' Read less
