Interview with Roger Sharp

07 October 2014

Posted by Sally Hart

Tell us about yourself in two sentences - who are you?

I’m Roger Sharp, normally known as Sharpy, and I’m a professional surf photographer. A rare breed of shutterbug that half live in the sea.

QWhat's the weirdest situation you've found yourself in while taking a photograph?

ANothing too weird happens in the sea. It’s always exciting and sometimes dangerous but rarely weird.

QWhat do you shoot on? What's your favourite set up?

AHistorically Canon from my first manual AE1-Program film camera in the mid 90s through to the EOS 7D MKII which is on pre-order. I’ve been using the Sony mirrorless system a lot in the last year. The NEX7 and the new A7S are phenomenal cameras. Favourite set up is the 7D in my waterhousing with the 8-15mm Canon fisheye lens. As swimming and shooting in tubes is the best part of my job. I also love using the Sony’s on my old school manual focus Canon 800mmFD bazooka.

QWhat's your number one tip for an aspiring photographer?

AWork on taking good photos not on accumulating Facebook followers. My second tip would be follow me on Twitter ;)
