Hi Robert, tell us about yourself in a few words.
I’m a visual marketer and content strategist for Bannersnack. I write on my personal blog and contribute articles to other websites and platforms. Hobbies include taking photos on my iPhone and playing basketball whenever I have time.
Talk us through a successful campaign you’ve worked on
I believe that the most successful campaigns are the ones that you are constantly working on. I can’t pinpoint a favourite one as I’m proud of them all, but I especially enjoyed redesigning and launching our Editor for Bannersnack. It was a natural launch, no big shout out or big PR campaign – it was all promoted organically. I have great memories about the launch because we had users who appreciated the design and congratulated the entire team. That was indeed a team effort!
What image trends will dominate social media in 2017?
The ones with storytelling at its core. It doesn’t matter if it’s an infographic, a cinemagraph, an Instagram story or a Snapchat story. What matters is the story behind the picture. Think about the photos that win Magnum or National Geographic awards. They are the ones that tell a real story.
If I had to choose one single kind of visual that integrates well in the social media landscape, it has to be the duotone image. The bright and powerful colours do a good job in disrupting the newsfeed and challenge what consumers are used to seeing daily on social media.
What advice do you have for integrating visuals in content marketing strategies?
Whenever you post a photo, a video or any piece of content, think about your audience - who will see it? Will it urge them to engage with your content? Is it doing enough to get their attention?
Aside from your own work, what’s the strangest, or most memorable campaign you’ve ever seen?
Dollar Shave Club is always a great example when talking about stand out content marketing campaigns. They started with a video and built a blog around it where they talked about topics every man (and woman) are interested in. They create fresh, dynamic content, communicate with their community and engage their fans. We can all learn something from them.
Your #1 Tip for visual storytelling.
If you don’t love it, then don’t do it.
