Interview with Radek Procyk

Hi Radek! Tell us about yourself in two sentences - who are you?

I am a photographer from Prague, Czech republic. I started photography many years ago (about 20 years back), it was the time of classical analogue photography and I am very happy for it – before the digital era of photography, you needed to put more thought into pictures, not just press the shutter, and my early experience of photography helps me every day.

QWhat's the weirdest situation you've found yourself in while taking a photograph?

AThe weirdest moment was when I was arrested because of photographing military buildings and soldiers. It was crazy situation, to be in prison in different country without any contact with my family, just sitting in the room for a few days, waiting for help from embassy.

QWhat's your favourite subject matter?

AMy favourite topic in last three years has been the refugee crisis. I have been to Syria, Iraq, Turkey and also the Balkans. It is very interesting to be witness to this extreme situation, and talking with refugees about lost homes, the future, and hope.

QWhat's your number one tip for an aspiring photographer?

ATaking pictures is like sport, if you would like to go to Olympic games you must train every day. It is the same for photography – if you would like to be a good photographer, it is necessary to train everyday and everywhere.

I really love two of my pictures. This is the first. In this picture you can see the really happy faces of the boys, who are leaving Hungary and are on their way to their dream ... Read more

This series of photography was created during a one day period in Hegyeshalom in Hungary. I was there with my friend (also a photographer) and we were waiting here for the train that carries refugees from south Hungary.Refugees exit the train there and continue about one or two kilometres to the Hungary - Austria border. They really love this place, because they are leaving Hungary, a country which is unfriendly to refugees and entering Austria, a country which really helps them.It was an interesting situation because when we arrived, there was nobody on the border, but after the train came, there was more then one thousand people in this place - and it happened three or four times a day. It's thanks to the many volunteers and many hours of great work they put in that this situation is possible.
