Interview with Marcus Hennen

20 January 2017

Posted by Sally Hart

Hi Marcus! Tell us about yourself in two sentences - who are you?

I’m a German amateur photographer, husband and dad of two wonderful girls. For me, photography is an escape from my work as a software developer. I love the art of creating a different imaginative feel, to explore the unusual and seek out new places. I've never got any special photographic education and I'm still learning ...

QWhat's the weirdest situation you've found yourself in while taking a photograph?

AThis is difficult to answer because I’ve rarely found myself in a weird situation while taking a photograph. Last year I visited the monastery Mont-Saint-Michel in Normandy, France with my family. We went on a tour of the monastery and finally arrived in the dining room. The room was huge and there were a lot of visitors. The room looked great and in the rear area, soft light shone through large windows on the right. It was a great light mood. I knew it would be a great photo, but there were just too many people. Suddenly a group of visitors left the room and I had an almost unobstructed view into the room, but I heard the next larger group of people entering the room behind me. I knelt on the ground to show the rest of the visitors that I wanted to take pictures. I placed my family right and left next to me to stop the people behind me. In the meantime I lay almost on the ground, and finally the last visitors disappeared from the room. I only had a few seconds, but I took my photo and did not have to retouch anyone. (see pic below)

QWhat do you shoot on? What's your favourite set up?

ACurrently I shoot on a Nikon D800. Normally I have my full equipment in my bag. When I’m travelling I mainly use the Nikkor 28-300mm lens but also my Nikkor 50mm is one of my favourite lenses especially for city photography. I’m using my Nikkor 105mm macro lens for portrait and macro photography because it gives a wonderful bokeh and fine details. Sometimes I have the opportunity to use a Nikkor 14-24mm lens for landscape photography.

QWhat's your number one tip for an aspiring photographer?

AIf you have no specific concept, be prepared for anything. Search for new angles and new perspectives. Keep your eyes open and look for new things. Understand your camera as well as possible and just keep shooting. Be inspired by nearly everything and be creative. I have the experience that the best motives are rather unexpected, so never go out without your camera!

'This is the one I shot in my weirdest situation I’ve found while taking a photograph. There were so many people in the room and I had to wait a long time for the right moment to take this picture. This photo was captured handheld and the light situation seemed not to be perfect but I shoot in RAW format, so that I could fix some things in the post processing.' Read less

'The photo was taken in September last year in Schwerte, Germany. In the morning, shortly after the sunrise, a different scenario can be found almost daily. Especially in autumn with light morning mist over the river and the neighboring meadows. This point I pass every day on my way to my office. Often I have my camera with me and then regularly find new motives. You can always discover new highlights there, whether it is a stand-up paddler paddling on the river or as in this case horses, which graze on the paddock.' Read less
