Interview with Maizurah Ariff

21 October 2016

Hi Maizurah! Tell us about yourself in two sentences - who are you?

I am a travel enthusiast based in Kuala Lumpur. A self-taught photographer, whose learning mostly comes from joining group outings and interacting with other photographers via social media, such as Instagram and Facebook. I view the world around me as a gift and believe that pieces of it can be shared through photographs.

QWhat's the weirdest situation you've found yourself in while taking a photograph?

AHaving to climb a tree. Me and a friend were at the bottom of U-Bien bridge in Myanmar and spotted some fishermen throwing their fishing nets from their boats, realizing it would be an amazing moment to capture an aerial shot. With the help of the locals, we climbed a 15-foot tree as a short cut to the top of the bridge, all in the name of aerial photography.

QWhat do you shoot on? What's your favourite set up?

AI have always shot with a Canon camera and my favorite lenses would have to be my wide angle and telephoto lenses. I started with a 650D and upgraded to a full frame camera the 6D which I'm loving. I love capturing nature and landscape, it's my forte.

QWhat's your number one tip for an aspiring photographer?

ALearning is a life time process, always have patience. Never stick to only one angle in a shot, creatively play with natural lights. Above all, love what you do and be passionate. It's helpful to know some technical points on how your camera works. Blend that in with passion, and eureka, you will create beautiful images.

I had never captured extreme sport before, and my first attempt was during the 2015 base jump event held at KL Tower, Kuala Lumpur. It was challenging because at the time, the haze hit Malaysia. I had to put a mask on and at times it was hard to breathe. I was harnessed on the ledge of the tower that stands 300 meters above sea level. With my telephoto lens, I managed to capture two base jumpers in action, and low and behold, it became my favorite pic of all time. Read less

On the way to Lombok airport, driving through what I thought were rice paddy fields, but was told by the driver it was soy beans instead. I spotted some farmers were sieving the beans. I told the driver to stop and I quickly ran towards them. I was working with the wind direction to get a swirl-like motion on the dried soy beans. Read less

The money shot - a reflection of monks walking on U-Bien bridge, Myanmar. Geared with a telephoto 70-200mm lens, the photo was captured on the longest teak wood bridge in the world. It was sunrise and I was lucky as there were not many pedestrians then, and I managed to frame the three monks with their reflections. Read less

To be able to capture this bird’s eye view of the Tun Sakaran Marine Park, one must hike the nature trail to reach the peak. The hike takes about 45mins to an hour and it was all worth it. The view was simply breathtaking and you need a wide angle or a fish eye lens to capture the picturesque scenery. Read less

I was taking a stroll by the jetty at Maiga Island, Sabah, Malaysia. The island is mainly populated by sea gypsies (also locally known as ‘Bajau Laut’). This girl was spotted staying afloat in a pail. The sea is their playground and it was a humbling experience for me to truly witness their life. Read less
