Interview with Konstantin Binder

01 July 2015

Posted by Sally Hart

Hi Konstantin! Tell us about yourself in two sentences - who are you?

I am photographer and writer living in London with my wonderful wife and two cats. Which is actually slightly exaggerated as I am an admin who loves taking photographs and who loves writing. The bit about the wife and the cats is accurate though.

QWhat's the weirdest situation you've found yourself in while taking a photograph?

AMany years ago I was travelling with a friend in Honduras and we approached a soldier and asked him if he was happy for us to take a photograph of him. Don’t ask, we were young and naive. Anyway, he agreed and my friend took a shot which turned out to be really really good. My shot was really really bad because I forgot my camera at the hostel. Thinking about it that wasn’t weird, it was plain stupid.

QWhat do you shoot on? What's your favourite set up?

AI used to own Nikon SLRs and DSLRs and quite a few lenses. Then I sold the lot and got a Leica M9 and a 28mm f/2 Summicron lens and I am not looking back. Best camera ever, fabulous lens, no silly autofocus, splendid sharpness, gorgeous colours and bokeh to die for. Good old fashioned photography apart from the fact that the M9 is a digital camera. And perfect for landscapes which I like.

QWhat's your number one tip for an aspiring photographer?

AGo out there and shoot. Don’t follow rules. Have fun. If you don’t like the shot, bin it. If others don’t like the shot but you like it don’t listen to others and keep it. Always always always carry a camera with you. Seriously, always. You never know, you might miss something. And the bit about good equipment not being important? Forget it. Invest some money. And don’t listen to number one tips from other photographers.
