Interview with Irena Anna

05 December 2014

Posted by Sally Hart

Hi Irena! Tell us about yourself in two sentences - who are you?

I was born in Poland and have an Italian husband who being a diplomat has allowed me to live in many places (China, India, South Korea). I have had the opportunity to travel the world and photograph it. Having moved back to Italy 2 years ago I have dedicated myself to studying and practicing photography in particular social reportage.

QWhat's the weirdest situation you've found yourself in while taking a photograph?

AThe weirdest situation probably happened in Jerusalem this spring. I was walking on the narrow streets of the city to photograph the colourful shops in the souk when I suddenly heard the screams and panic of the people. I felt the burning sensation in my eyes. I immediately realised that it was tear gas in the area of the nearby Mosque because there were clashes of protesters. The situation calmed down pretty quickly but I was very much frightened.

QWhat do you shoot on? What's your favourite set up?

AI use a Nikon D90 which is my first digital camera. 2 years ago I used an analogue F90.I have several lenses: wide-angle Sigma 10-20mm f1.4 for landscapes, Nikon 18-300mm f3.5, Nikon Macro 40mm f2.8 and my favourite Nikon 50mm f1.80 because I can use to shoot in low-light, for portraits, photojournalism and macros.

QWhat's your number one tip for an aspiring photographer?

AAlways carry your camera with you. You will never miss those moments which always seem to happen at the most unexpected times.

It was pleasant to drink tea and to talk with this man, he had an expressive, interesting face and he was very happy to be photographed.' Read less
