Hi Daniel! Tell us about yourself in two sentences - who are you?

I'm a retired construction site administrator, now aged 67, with a love of photography spanning over 45 years. I'm currently living on the north east coast of England.

QWhat's the weirdest situation you've found yourself in while taking a photograph?

ANot so weird as such... But taking landscape photos can get you into all sorts of trouble. Very wet feet from the waves when taking seascapes, the right position is always from in the water two feet deep. Or landscapes in Scotland, the best position is from that muddy bog. Or take the Chemical Beach at Seaham... you can get carried away taking photos and the tide will cut you off. If this is the case, just wait for the tide to turn so you can access the rocks and the way off the beach.

QWhat do you shoot on? What's your favourite set up?

AI use a Canon 5D mark III, and lens-wise I use Canon 17-40mm, Canon 24-105mm, Canon 70-200mm, and a Canon 300 F4.

QWhat's your number one tip for an aspiring photographer?

AGet up early and catch the dawn, and never be satisfied with only 'very good' photos, they've got to be 'wow'.

I love this image. I've photographed the wheels at Seaham a few times, but I always wait for the tide to go back down, as the wheels are underwater most of the time and can only... Read more

I love this image. I've photographed the wheels at Seaham a few times, but I always wait for the tide to go back down, as the wheels are underwater most of the time and can only be photographed at low tide. This was low tide at dawn, and when I got there the light was not at its best, just a hint of dawn moving across the sky... I used a Lee Big stopper to get that long exposure and dreamy look... It's one of my best shots of the Seaham Wheels. Read less

A shot taken one very cold morning! I could not believe a surfer was in the sea - it was 6 degrees below. He was sitting there waiting for that special wave. Photographed at Seaton Carew, Hartlepool, looking towards Redcar steelworks. This shot cannot be photographed anymore as the steelworks are shut, they closed down this year. All the atmosphere is gone. Read less

Saltburn Beach in North Yorkshire... It was daytime, not twilight. A heavy sea mist came down and covered the sun. The fisherman was packing up for the day and walking off the beach so I followed him, taking image after image. I love the cottage in the mist. In Photoshop I lit the window up and turned the image blue to give it a twilight look... I love the effect. Read less

Taken at Bamburgh Castle, Northumberland. I love the dawn, and this castle is a wonderful place to photograph if the light is right. I was a little late this morning as the roads had snow on them and I could not drive as fast as I would have liked. I ran down the beach to get this shot before the light on the clouds was lost forever. The reflection could be a bit better... but you get what nature gives you. Read less

I was on my way to Pickering in North Yorkshire to to shoot portraits of the 1940s war weekend. It's a wonderful event, with people all dressed up in 1940s fashion. There was a heavy mist and as the sun came up, I had to find a place to stop and just take anything that would make a stunning mist dawn image... this is just outside Helmsley, simply a tree in the mist. It works for me! Read less
