Interview with Dan Martland

20 August 2014

Hi Dan! Tell us about yourself in two sentences - who are you?

I'm a British television cameraman and editor working and living in New York City. But my main passion lies in photography. I snap what I can in my spare time.

QWhat's the weirdest situation you've found yourself in while taking a photograph?

A Never really a dull moment when taking my photographs. Quite often I like to get down low on the ground looking for a new perspective and funky angles on things. I've been urinated on by dogs and drenched by passing yellow cabs through puddles. But my finest hour was causing a huge human pile up at grand central station whilst taking a low angle shot of the escalators. And yes I was under that pile of people with my Nikon. Oh how to piss off New Yorkers.

QWhat do you shoot on? What's your favourite set up?

AI actually shoot on a few cameras. My main camera to date is the new Nikon D810. Amazing for landscapes due to its 36megapixel sensor and amazing dynamic range. And my trusty sony rx100 m3. I never leave home without it. Oh and there always my iPhone5s

QWhat's your number one tip for an aspiring photographer?

A Always shoot raw to get the best out of your camera and images. And if you're bored of shooting in the same locations ... Try going out at night time, those same locations can have a whole new feel to them in the night. (Take a tripod... It's dark out)

"My favourite image I've taken and uploaded to Picfair is my Manhattan skyline at sunrise. I just love the colours and the calm and tranquil feeling it has for a city that is known for never sleeping. So much so I've had this image blown up and printed on a 85" wide plexiglass and mounted in my house." Read less

"This has been my biggest seller! During hurricane Irene, my work packed us to the Intercontinental hotel near Times Square and this pic was taken with me hanging out of my window! The roads look nice and shiny because of the rain and of course, a million yellow cabs buzzing around really adds to it. Took the shot with my old Canon S100 point and shoot camera. I couldn’t actually fit my DSLR out through the small gap in the window." Read less

"I had a feeling it was going to be a lovely sunset on this night, so I jumped in the car and headed for Manhattan. Unfortunately, the New York traffic stopped me in my tracks and I had to settle for stopping off at Jersey City - I even had to park on double yellows to get the pic. Still, it's a nice dramatic sunset shot and well worth the parking ticket I ended up getting! This was taken on my two day NEW Nikon D810 with 14-24mm 2.8 @14mm." Read less

"This one was taken in Hoboken New Jersey. I loved how the sun was lighting up the snowflakes as they were falling towards me. It's often quite hard to capture snow falling, it can end up looking like drizzle and not particularly interesting. But this works nicely and the couple handing hands adds a little bit of charm and romance to the shot. Love the contrast with the harsh sunlight. Another one taken on the way to work with my Sony Rx100 Mk2 point and shoot." Read less

"Another sunset, this time shot from Downtown Brooklyn (Dumbo). I actually went down there for a shot of the financial district overlooking the East river but I just happened to look left at the right moment to see this beautiful shot. I managed to change my lens just quick enough to get the pic. This actually happens a lot to me - I go out with intentions of shooting one thing and end up with something else entirely. You make your own luck I reckon!D800 with 70-200mm 2.8 @200mm" Read less
