Interview with Chris Froome

10 June 2016

Hi Chris! Tell us about yourself in two sentences - who are you?

I am an ageing amateur stock photographer, who fits his love of photographing wild animals around working shifts at Heathrow airport for a major airline. I love the sound of birdsong, I'm never happier than when I'm out taking pictures of birds.

QWhat's the weirdest situation you've found yourself in while taking a photograph?

AI can’t think of any weird situations that have happened when taking a shot, maybe once when a wren was making a nest in my old garden hide while I was shooting a woodpecker. It half built the nest before realising I was there! Unsurprisingly, I didn't get the woodpecker shot.

QWhat do you shoot on? What's your favourite set up?

AI shoot with two Olympus OMD EM-1s now, usually with mm3 adapters for four third lenses. My favourite set up would have to be be the 300mm f2.8 on one body and the 50-200mm swd on the other body. In my pocket I usually have the Olympus m.zuiko 60mm macro, and the four thirds 1.4x tc. When I work on a tripod I use the 2x tc as well.

QWhat's your number one tip for an aspiring photographer?

AFor any aspiring photographer my top tip is to keep taking pictures, analyse them, work out what's going wrong, and go again. Practise, practise, practise - it's the key in my opinion. Also, if possible, do workshops with pros in your chosen genre.

My favourite shot I’ve posted to Picfair has to be the little goldcrest I think. I’d seen a goldcrest for the first time at Bedfont Lakes the week before, and, after trying for an hour I could not get a good shot of it. This was my first trip to Pulborough Brooks and as I passed a thick mess of brambles, I spotted movement. I stopped and stayed still, and out he popped. I got a burst of 5 before he disappeared - this was the first frame. Read less

This was taken during my last shoot in my old garden hide (I have since moved my wildlife area into an overgrown alley at the back of my garden). It was a very overcast day and I had taken the 300mm f2.8 to the hide with me. Bearing in mind that Olympus lenses on Olympus bodies give you twice the shooting range, this squirrel climbed my apple tree and stared at me, a portrait was all I could get! Read less

This was a kitten we bred. I had the Olympus EM-5 with the m.zuiko 45mm attached to hand, and caught this cute shot. It's not as sharp and detailed as I would like, but who could resist taking that shot? The EM-5 now lives in my car with a long zoom attached. Read less

The resident swans at Bedfont Lakes have had their annual cygnets, this one was somewhat tired out by all the hustle and bustle of lake life. Just for a few seconds it was isolated from its mum, dad, and the rest of the brood, and the lovely blue sky lent a deep blue tone to the water. Read less
