Interview with Ceri Davies

Hi Ceri! Tell us about yourself in two sentences - who are you?

I’m a 32 year old photographer from a small village in South Wales, UK. A huge passion for photography and a desire to see the world and experience new cultures saw me leaving my role as Head Of Photography in a London studio and embarking on a year long adventure with my other half. We’re currently enjoying life on the South Island of New Zealand.

QWhat's the weirdest situation you've found yourself in while taking a photograph?

AFollowing a impromptu and highly spectated haircut on the dusty, back streets of Jaisalmer, bordering the Thar Desert in India, we were caught out by the first rainfall the town had seen in months. Within minutes the steep, narrow roads turned to rivers, the adults scrambled for cover while kids were making the most of the rare, torrential downpour. Before it was too late we dived in the back of a tuktuk, the partially sheltered journey back to the hotel gave me a great vantage point to shoot the scenes that this immense amount of rain had caused.

QWhat do you shoot on? What's your favourite set up?

AI shoot with a Canon 5D mk3, and mostly favour the Canon 35mm f1.4 lens. I love the focal length for everyday use and it suits my style of photography. The fixed focal length makes you work harder to get the composition you want, I like that. My travel bag also contains a Canon 24-105 f4, which gives me a few more options, along with the 40mm f2.8 Pancake lens from Canon - a good, discreet option when venturing to less favourable environments.

QWhat's your number one tip for an aspiring photographer?

APractice. Spend time with your camera in hand, shoot as much as possible and understand how light works. Learn the rules and break them.
