Hi Andy! Tell us about yourself in two sentences - who are you?

I am a born and bred 52 year old Yorkshire man, living just a few miles north of York with a very understanding wife and have two grown up sons. I am very lucky that my daytime job of rural Postman, covering the Castle Howard estate and surrounding villages, allows me to see some stunning local North Yorkshire scenery.

QWhat's the weirdest situation you've found yourself in while taking a photograph?

AI can't really think of any weird situations, perhaps more comical, such as very nearly slipping down a steep grassy hillside with my all camera gear, or the time at Coniston Water, where I thought I'd be walking on firm ground, but was actually trying to walk on a bed of floating leaves; there was a new expletive for every step taken.

QWhat do you shoot on? What's your favourite set up?

AI started photography 3 years ago, with a Canon EOS 600D and a kit lens. I've since moved over to a Canon 5D MK III and almost always use a Canon EF 24-105L lens. With my main interest being landscape photography, I have a sturdy Manfrotto tripod and a set of Lee graduated filters.

QWhat's your number one tip for an aspiring photographer?

ATry not to be a photographic 'Jack of all trades', spend time becoming comfortable and confident in your main area of interest. Take lots of photos and ask lots of questions.

'I think my favourite pic I've uploaded to Picfair would be 'Summer Evening Sunlight.' I'd decided to go out in the car, hoping to find my next landscape shot, but after a couple of hours I still hadn't pressed the shutter button. On my journey back home and with nothing to lose, I decided to skirt along the edge of the Howardian Hills and that's where I got lucky. The dense grey cloud cover began to break, leaving some quite interesting formations and the low evening sun lit up the hillside and the clouds with it. Have you ever experienced that excitement when seeing 'the shot'? I did, just at that moment.' Read less

'The way that the low evening sunlight illuminated the grass verges along the edge of the farm entrance, naturally guided my eyes along the track and away into the distance. I also liked the way that the track dipped away, adding a slight sense of mystery and leaving me wondering what was there further along.' Read less

'I'd spotted the run down barn over on a hillside in the distance, but I was never quite sure how to get to it. After asking around, I found out the land owner's name and called to see him asking for permission to get a closer look and to take some shots. I gave my word that I wouldn't trample the crop underfoot and as a result, it took me a little longer to wind my way along the tractor tracks to reach my goal.' Read less

'This local image was taken just outside the village of Bulmer, on the Howardian Hills. I visited this location on a day off from work and was spotted by one of my regular postal round customers. As a result, I was invited back to his home for an evening drink and a chat. Needless to say, before I realised it, the time had passed quickly and I'd missed my opportunity for the evening. This photo was taken on the following evening.' Read less

'My wife Jill and I have taken our holidays in the Lot-Dordogne region of France, several times over the last 5 years or so. We love the relaxed atmosphere, the food and drink, the people and of course, the beautiful scenery. On this occasion, we decided to go out for a drive, with no particular destination in mind. On our way, we passed through one of the smaller villages and noticed a group of people sorting over their freshly harvested Walnuts. In all of our previous visits, we'd never witnessed a scene like this and I just had to turn the car around and go back to make the most of the opportunity.' Read less

'This place has proved to be very popular with photographers and it shows the wreck of the Admiral Von Tromp, at Saltwick Bay on the North Yorkshire coast. In this image we don't see the usual sunrise or sunset and I think the fog adds a sense of menace, suiting the subject quite well.' Read less

'Quite an atmospheric image. The wooden groynes, appearing battered and worn by the relentless action of the sea but despite everything, still standing for all to see. I used a Lee 10 stop filter to smooth out the movement of the sea, this filter is also very suitable for taking images on dull days. I think the image in black and white, fits the mood well.'
