Interview With Abd Halim Hadi

15 May 2017

Hi Abd! Tell us about yourself in two sentences - who are you?

I'm a journalist based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I started photography as a hobby and also as part of my job on journalism assignments. I’m experienced in taking photographs of places, cultural, lifestyle and recreation, I’ve developed a reportage style in my photography and I love photographing people.

QWhat's the weirdest situation you've found yourself in while taking a photograph?

AI accidentally fell asleep, whilst waiting for sunrise at the top of Mount Kinabalu in Borneo as a result of severe Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). I was alone at the slope because the other team members were already reaching the peak. Falling asleep at that altitude, in extreme cold morning temperatures, could have been deadly but it was worth the wait for perhaps one of the best sunrises I have ever photographed.

QWhat do you shoot on? What's your favourite set up?

A Most of my work has been shot with a Canon 6D, using lenses like 16-35mm, 70-200mm and 50mm. Currently, I'm shooting with Fujifilm X100T and Fujifilm X-T1. Less weight for productivity, I guess.

QWhat's your number one tip for an aspiring photographer?

AThere is always beauty in everything. Just keep looking.

QWhat's the one thing you love most about Picfair?

A It’s a unique platform and marketplace for global images. Besides the chance of earning money selling our photographs, Picfair also provides great collection of images and photographers, around the world — and self-set pricing is awesome.

"This was taken at Tabur Hill, a popular hiker's place, 15 km from Kuala Lumpur city centre. The 360 degree view from the top offers beautiful contrasting scenery of rainforest and modern city - due to its vicinity, many hikers regularly attempt to climb the hill on weekends despite its dangerous trail that has claimed many lives." "In this picture, I try to get away from a usual milkyway photograph by experimenting with black and white to convey a more unique and emotional message to grab attention. The appearance of the man at the end of the road facing the Milky Way, is my interpretation of relationship between humans and the creator." Read less
