We as humans may be making leaps in the development of technology and medicine, faced with some natural disasters we are still largely helpless, as recent hurricanes and earthquakes have showed us once again. Volcanoes are another such natural wonder that can turn highly dangerous when erupting. Eruptions tend to happen when the earth’s volatile tectonic plates shift and cause a surge in pressure, allowing lava and ashes to release from the magma chambers below. That we are still powerless in the face of such a force of nature became clear in 2010, when the eruption of the Islandic Eyjafjallajökull resulted in the closure of much of Europe’s airspace. Yet there is beauty in danger; some of our photographers have risked life and limb to bring you these mesmerising images of active volcanoes.
