Classical architectural styles often resorted to highly ornate decorative elements on building fronts to make their structure look interesting. From the 1940s, a number of modernist styles emerged as a counter-reaction to what they perceived as overly frilly displays of opulence. These new building styles went back to raw materials like brick, steel and concrete, and ditched the frills. Many modern styles rely on geometrical lines and repeat patterns to draw the viewer’s gaze. Add to this the play of light and shadow, and you have the perfect material for a fascinating photograph. We’ve selected some of our library's best for your viewing pleasure.
