2018 marks 100 years of the statehood of the Baltic States: Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. In 1918 (albeit at different times of the year) all three nations declared themselves independent from Russia - a direct result of the abdication of Czar Nicholas II and the rise of Bolshevik Revolution when the call for sovereignty in the Baltics became a national movement.
This initial reign of independence, however, was short-lived and by 1944 all three nations had been absorbed into the USSR; only to declare themselves once again independent in 1991 following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Thirteen years later all three states became members of the European Union and the Baltic States are now flourishing in the wider European community as leaders in the fields of industrial production, tourism and technology. In fact, Estonia is the first nation ever to offer e-citizenship.
A multitude of centennial celebrations are set to take place throughout the year and here at Picfair, we have photographers based in all three countries, providing us with a regular stream of absolutely stunning, authentic shots that truly capture the national spirit. Here are the best from the Baltics...
