The Balkan peninsula, situated in South East of Europe is the original melting pot of Eastern and Western civilisations on the European continent. The region has a drawn-out and complex history, having been part of both the Ottoman and Byzantine empires and also Ancient Greece, with its history leading to the formation of this distinctively unique region. Among dramatic mountain peaks and soaring river rapids, secluded rural communities and sprawling cities can be found, where mosques and churches nestle side-by-side and a variety of cultures, lifestyles and cuisines meld into something uniquely 'Balkan'.
The contrasts found in the Balkans create something undeniably beautiful; not just in terms of its diverse range of landscapes and climates, (with Mediterranian beaches, arid rural plains, ancient forests and fjords all accounted for), but also in terms of its people - some of the friendliest and most hospitable in Europe.
The Balkans have long been a destination for the most intrepid travellers, but the region is also becoming increasingly popular for city breaks with a difference and for unspoilt beach and skiing holidays. The region is also a clear favourite with our photographers - both with those who live in the Balkans and those who visit.
We welcome both professional and amateur photographers to submit their work to Picfair. In fact, anyone can join, and our open door policy means we have the most authentic images available for license on the marketplace!
Just take a look for yourself!👌
