Backlighting (also known as rim lighting) is a photographic technique, in which a controlled use of light is placed either directly behind or at right angles to the subject.
An image with backlighting can be produced using both available and artificial light, and a popular time to work with this technique is during the golden hours of sunrise or sunset; with epic hues of red, yellow and orange and striking, sharp silhouettes. Backlighting, however, can also skillfully be used during the day to create stunning scenes with a difference, and the use of this technique can turn an otherwise average scene into something truly out-of-this-world.
Backlighting is heavily favoured by our incredibly talented pool of photographers and appears in the Picfair collection in remarkable form and across a range of subjects. Just take a look at our curated collection below and see for yourself! And as with every Picfair image (and unlike any other image library!) when you license an image with us, the vast majority of your money will be going directly to the photographer.
