Interview with Fabian Schmiedlechner

Tell us about yourself in two sentences - who are you?

I'm a guy spending too much time sitting in front of a screen, working on my photos or developing apps. Nine months ago, I grabbed my camera and decided to go to South America for a year and come back home with some good pictures and stories.

What's the weirdest situation you've found yourself in while taking a photograph?

Tough one but I think this is the weirdest. It was my last day in Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay. Through a fence, I climbed inside an abandoned bull arena. It was quite dangerous because it was falling apart and obviously I wasn't supposed to be in there. Eventually, I spent more than 5 hours in there because I couldn't stop taking pictures! At one point I was just thinking - what kind of weirdo spends 5 hours in an abandoned bull arena by himself, haha!

What do you shoot on? What's your favourite set up?

I'm still shooting with my first camera - a Sony Alpha 65 which I bought in 2012. I don't have a lot of gear. I have the kit lens, a 35mm f1.8 Sony Prime and a 28-75mm 2.8 Tamron. Latter one is the only lens I brought on my trip. None of it I would consider my favourite setup not only because it's already dying slowly. But I can tell you what my favourite reasonable setup would be - a Sony Alpha 7RII, a wide open wide-angle lens and a zoom lens similar to the one I have right now.

What's your number one tip for an aspiring photographer?

To me consistency and a good workflow are essential. Go out there, shoot whatever it is you enjoy shooting, share it with some sort of community, get feedback and try to develop your own style.
