Interview with Brian Wood-Koiwa

Hi Brian! Tell us about yourself in two sentences - who are you?

I'm an urban photographer based in Tokyo, Japan. My specialty is making the urban mundane a bit less so; a bit weird.

QWhat's the weirdest situation you've found yourself in while taking a photograph?

AWell, I have found myself in many weird situations in the past, but it was before I got into photography. Now what I do is try to make the normal weird through my photography.

QWhat do you shoot on? What's your favourite set up?

AI use a Canon 60D and 90% of the time with a 24-70mm. Since I am an urban photographer, my favourite setup is just me walking around with just my camera and a small Gorillapod tripod.

QWhat's your number one tip for an aspiring photographer?

ADon't get caught up in trying to be perfect. Embrace a little chance and chaos in your work.

My favourite image would have to be the one I most recently uploaded called 'Fathomless Polis'. It was actually taken from my balcony. I have a wonderful city view and the sunri... Read more

My favourite image would have to be the one I most recently uploaded called 'Fathomless Polis'. It was actually taken from my balcony. I have a wonderful city view and the sunrise was spectacular that morning. In post-processing, I got the idea of having the city go black to make it look like it goes deep into an abyss, and to add a bit of mystery and weirdness to it. Read less

I am an apprentice in the Arcanum (an online master/apprentice photography platform) and for one of my assignments I had to photograph a bird in flight. There are thousands of crows/ravens living in Tokyo, and they fly by my apartment (and get my cat all excited for a hunt). On this occasion, it was a breezy day and the crows were having a grand time playing in the wind streams and gusts. Luckily one was flying right in a space among a clump of skyscrapers. Read less

This was taken at a seaside park known for its seasonal flowers and plants along the Pacific coast, about 2 hours north of Tokyo in the city of Hitachi. My husband and I climbed this small hill overlooking the entire area, which is covered in these bushes that turn red in the autumn. I noticed this couple standing there admiring the view together, silhouetted by the sunset. Read less

I love going to observatories to look over the massive metropolis of Tokyo. This image was taken from the highest observatory in Tokyo. It's called Tokyo Skytree, and is one of, if not the highest observatory in the world (about 450m high). The river is the Sumidagawa, which runs through central Tokyo and flows out into Tokyo bay. This is a lotus flower I took at a Buddhist Temple many years ago when I first started to get into photography. The area is called Kita-Kamakura (North Kamakura), about an hour southwest of Tokyo. It is like a mini-Kyoto and has many very old temples. When it's not a holiday weekend, it is very peaceful. Read less

This is Senso-ji Temple in central Tokyo, in the Asakusa district. It is the oldest temple in Tokyo (I believe). Well, the institution of the temple is very old. But like many temples in Tokyo, the actual structures are newer due to the many fires that spread through the city back when it was all wood structures, and WWII bombings. Only a handful of temples have the original buildings. Read less
