Interview with Alec Davidson

25 September 2015

Posted by Sally Hart

Hi Alec! Tell us about yourself in two sentences - who are you?

I am a U.K expat living and working in Dali, Yunnan Province, China. I have lived in Asia since 2007.

QWhat's the weirdest situation you've found yourself in while taking a photograph?

AThe weirdest situation I have found myself in whilst taking a photograph was when I went to shoot the sunset on an island close to where I used to live. I climbed down a cliff-face with all my gear, but without first working out how I’d get back up again in the dark. Two hours and several dozen expletives later, I emerged victorious at the top of the cliff…only to then have to climb back down and retrieve the tripod I had left at the bottom.

QWhat do you shoot on? What's your favourite set up?

AI shoot using a Nikon system and primarily use fast, prime lenses. I zoom with my feet and prefer to bracket my shots, trying to achieve as much as possible in camera. This keeps any post-production to an absolute minimum.

QWhat's your number one tip for an aspiring photographer?

AIf you have a camera with ‘manual’ mode, use it. Learn reciprocals and use them too. You’ll thank yourself later.
