23 Breathtaking Images of Svalbard, Norway’s Remote and Beautiful Archipelago

Svalbard, found towards the top of the world and deep within the Arctic Circle, is the most Northerly point in Europe.

The remote archipelago is run by Norway and is also home to the northernmost (permanently) inhabited area on the planet: the town of Longyearbyen. Currently 2,642 people reside in Svalbard and prior to 1925 it was known by its Dutch name Spitsbergen, which is the title of the largest of the islands today. As you’d expect, the remote group of islands in the Arctic Ocean boasts many interesting geographical features such as mountains, fjords, and yes a lot of ice - and this is reflected in the wildlife found in this region. Being so far North towards the North Pole, it is thus a fantastic location to experience the Northern Lights.

Getting to the Svalbard is not the easiest of tasks, with the only direct flights to it from either Oslo or Tromsø in the very north of mainland Norway; even these are quite infrequent. We've collected 23 of our best images of these beautiful-yet often barren landscapes from the islands.
