One might assume that churches are built for specific religious communities but iff we take a look at some of the most reputable and grandiose churches, synagogues and mosques, we will quickly find out that this is hardly the case. The Hagia Sofia was initially built as a Christian cathedral, then later served as an imperial mosque. The Visigothic-Catholic church was shared between the Muslim and Christian community up until 784 then used solely as a mosque until 1236, until it became a Catholic church once more. Most of the places in this list still provide service, with the exception of the Hagia Sofia, which was turned into a museum in 1935. While the religious practices can be as diverse as the buildings in which they take place, they all hold one thing in common: their incredible beauty
