If you’re a windmill, the chances are that life peaked in 1850.
Roughly, the total number of wind-powered mills during this time was around 200,000, with 10,000 of those in windmill-friendly the Netherlands. Now only 1,000 of these are still standing in the country and even fewer remain in operation; many of these are operated by keen volunteers. And we’re glad that these people exist, preserving these marvellous structures that possess a unique cultural heritage.
