The rainbow: the meteorological phenomenon most likely to have office workers gathering around the nearest window to get a peak, pedestrians stopping and gawping with camera phone in hand, and generally uniting humans for a brief shared moment.
Now the part with the science: a rainbow is caused by the reflection, refraction and dispersion of light in water droplets, producing a glorious multi-coloured circular arc. Colours will always appear in the order of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and then violet. An acronym taught in schools to remind pupils of this order reads “Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain”, or if you fancy a more contemporary version “Really Offensive YouTube Games Built Into Videos.” Naturally the rainbow is ripe for photography - especially landscapes. However while there’s a handful in this gallery that don’t fall under this category, what they do have in common is a stunning approach to capturing the most colourful of weather phenomenons.
